Verdict Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS

With the absence of wide-angle images and slightly worse than the IS 850, IS 950 disappoints. It remains an excellent compact true to the reputation of Canon. Nevertheless, we would prefer the IS 850, which remains a reference.

With the IXUS 850 IS, Canon we had delivered a compact close to perfection. The arrival of the Ixus 950 IS has caused great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, we were quickly disappointed.

The Canon 950 IS incorporates the outline of the range Canon Ixus. In functionality and ergonomics, it is almost the twin of 850. In this, it is not a bad device. This is especially the accumulation of small details which, put together, brings disappointment.
Slightly larger, it loses a little in compactness and is gaining weight. But is total misunderstanding on the choice of Canon for the beach focal length of the aircraft. The IS 950 loses the wide-angle 28 mm (35 mm equivalent) of 850 IS. It starts at 35 mm.

This is not because they pointed out (we, and many of our colleagues), provides the advantage that the presence of a wide angle. In contrast, the end of tele passes 140 mm against 105 mm. It is far from compensate!

The finish is once again exemplary. Only the wheel mode selection has left us perplexed. Specificity of our model or defect general, the floating. The change was unclear, leaving us constantly in doubt.
The evolution of the LCD, is a very good point. The diagonal does not move (2.5 inches or 6.35 cm), but the definition from 207000 pixels (850 IS) 230000 pixels . The display, which is already excellent on the IS 850, is improving. The accuracy is there, and legibility follows. The IS 950 retains the optical viewfinder. A fact quite rare for stress.

The megapixel race is far from positive. The Canon IS 950 is, unfortunately, a perfect example. The wins a megapixel sensor for the same size (1 / 2, 5 inches). The presence of reducing noise Digic III (the last generation of image processor Canon) changes nothing, the images produced by the IS 950 are more noisy than the IS 850. Again, we should not be misunderstood. The image quality is more than correct. The IS 850 we had so enjoyed, that our level of exigeance for Canon is mounted very high. From this point of view, the IS 950 is a failure, it is less well.

The 950 IS incorporates the now indispensable and "regulatory" image stabilization. It fulfils its role perfectly offsetting the slight movement of hands and other tremors of the photographer. Canon sacrifice also fashionable at the time. The Canon IS 950 loads of face detection.
