Vis-a-vis a popular EOS 400D and competes with it more severe of Nikon, Pentax or Samsung, Canon reveals its new reflex camera semi-professional. The EOS 40D takes again best Canon reflex camera to offer an astonishing comfort of use.
The Japanese manufacturer gives the pendulums per hour while distilling some characteristics of his professional high-end (1D Mark) in the EOS 40D, successor of the 30D. Of face, the 40D is similar to its predecessors with his magnesium alloy case. Canon praises its resistance any time, even if it is not as visible as the tropicalization of Pentax K10D or K20D for example. The trap doors of access to the connector industries are just equipped with a joint. But of back one notices a larger screen (but keeping the same definition). Of this fact the buttons slip under screen LCD, which is not always very practical. Beside the selector knob of the collimator, one finds a new button AF it for the development via the autofocus.
Styles of images within reach.
A new button appears to modify the styles of images. Actual profits which avoid juggling in the menus to change an effect or parameter. In the same vein, the traditional barrel (with the priorities and traditional images mode) grows rich by three new items, identifying each one a style of image personalized. The photographer does not have to return thus any more in the menus to pass to another type of catch of creative sight. On this subject, the menus completely changed. One finds from now on an organization by mitre, authorizing to find and modify even more quickly (with the serrated rollers and minis-joystick) the parameters. Those besides are packed and transforms truly this reflex camera into camera overmeasure.
Vis-a-vis the general public reflex cameras (10,1 mégapixels of the 400D and 12,2 mégapixels of the 450D), Canon is satisfied with a sensor CMOS of 10,1 million pixels. But this last is different, it presents a better tolerance to the dark zones, the more so as the nine collimators in cross ensure a precise settling. For the sensor of format APS-C, it will thus be necessary to affect a multiplying coefficient of 1.6 on your optics, an unquestionable advantage for the animalist or sporting photographers, accustomed to the teleobjectives. Thanks to the new processor Digic IIl (initiated on the EOS 1DMark III), this reflex camera is indeed able to seize 6,5 images a second on sequences maximum of 75 stereotypes in JPEG and 17 in mode RAW.
Another innovation of the Canon high-end, included in this EOS 40D direct aiming. Discovered on Olympus and Panasonic, the mode Live View makes it possible to tally of the photographs since screen LCD as on a compact camera. Handling is not as obvious as with compact since the mirror rocks just to take the photograph. The autofocus in real-time is thus not available and it is thus necessary to be satisfied numerical zooms 5x and 10x on the screen. One would have appreciated a directional screen as on Sony Alpha 350 in particular.
In practice.
The comfort and the robustness of the case of the EOS 40D are without comparison with the 400.450D. As on these last specimens, the starting of the case activates the cleaning of the sensor automatically, with a system of vibration of the sensor. The sight seems larger and clear. The EOS 30D is a little sound while its substitute proves rather discrete. Already remarkable with the
EOS 30D, the catch of photograph in low light with the 40D was still improved. Up to 800 ISO, the noise is invisible, its perception remains acceptable of maximum sensitivity (1600 ISO, extensible in 3200 ISO in the menus). The dynamic functions of beaches in addition ensure one made very correct in high lights (photographs of snows, marriage…). By varying the saturation of the colors, contrast, clearness, the colour of the color, the results obtained are seizing. The respect of the colors, the exposure adapted, the details even in weak light and the intelligent autofocus (with mobile subject or not) guarantees a quality of image without fault, for little that the objective is stabilized. In addition, the battery does not change (compared to the 30D) east always ensures an autonomy of 1100 photographs (without flash). This last is shown always also powerful but flaring generally not the faces.
Canon EOS 40D takes again some innovations of the reflexs general publics (sensors, cleaning of the sensor) and high-end (Live view, processor Digic III). It is strongly distinguished from the cases line entry for the regular amateurs by his remarkable photographic quality with a great flexibility in use and personalization, which miss with the professional reflex cameras.
The EOS 40D constitutes truly an intermediate case of reference and authorizes a great versatility in spite of its simplicity. It is in particular well adapted for sporting or animalist photography, but also like second case for a professional. With Nikon, Canon is distinguished unfavourably, by not proposing a system of stabilization on the case.
An additional difference for the professionals, accustomed optics stabilized but which can divert the general public and the amateurs towards other manufacturers. This reflex camera is provided with CD including/understanding several basic software to classify its images but also of DIGITAL Photo Professionnal 3.1 (DPP), which supports format RAW and makes it possible to improve them.
