Verdict
Canon HG10 is a good HD camcorder to hard drive, but there are nevertheless some annoying flaws.Excellent image stabilization, excellent video quality.
The HG10 is significantly smaller than the HV20, but it has little lighter (570 g). And even though it weighs a little less than its main competitor, the Sony Handycam HDR-SR7, it is also a little higher. The case grey and money do not throw as far as the chassis almost entirely black SR7. However, the gain in height of the housing gives an easier and more comfortable.
To obtain a more compact camera, Canon has moved and redesigned a significant portion of orders. In some cases, the changes are welcome, including the general switch to zoom toggle, extremely smooth and pleasant, and the viewfinder expandable up to the eye. Other issues, such as the shield of the shoe-accessories, not attached to the box (both the cast right away, you end up anyway by misplaced), would have deserved to be modified but remained unchanged . The new multi-pad with key selection is much better with a touch screen. However, it is very difficult to use the directional pad without moving the scroll wheel, which ultimately makes navigation and manual focusing difficult. (Canon has also abandoned the wheel manual focus on the lens.)
The joystick of the HV20 is better placed. He resides in effect on the housing of the camera rather than part of the LCD. In other words, the HG10 requires you to shoot through the screen more often than necessary. A constraint unfortunate that not only accentuates the tremor, but also seeks much the battery.
The CMOS sensor 3 megapixels can record HD video native 1920 x 1080 pixels, which are then converted and interlaced format AVCHD, the resolution of 1440 x 1080 pixels. It can also record videos of 1440 x 1080/24p. Its 40 GB hard drive can store between 5.5 hours of video at 15 Mbps and not less than 15 hours of video to 5 Mbit / s. As usual, however, we advise you to take the maximum level of quality, unless you are absolutely sure that you do not want to touch your videos. You can also save pictures of a 3-megapixel photo mode or extract snapshots of 1920 x 1080 pixels while you shoot a movie mode. It is quite ridiculous that the shots can be recorded on a MiniSD card, and not on the hard drive.
The Set button on this part of the screen called commands shooting, exposure compensation, the development and speed reading. In camera mode, you can also find the settings of the flash. In video mode, a button "Function" gives access to methods planned to shutter priority, Aperture-priority, Ciné (for a professional appearance, coupled with the shooting at 24 fps) and Night with slow shutter . A point of access, it also allows him to achieve some options white balance, different preset effects image, and setting color depth (for a postérisé), sharpness, Contrast and brightness, digital effects, video quality and size extraction shots. Regarding the photos, you have the choice between modes of evaluative metering, central weighted and spot, burst mode and bracketing, and various resolutions.
We would have preferred that three features, namely the priority development (which gives the choice between the development and focus mode Focus Canon), the AF mode (instant and regular) and speed zoom (variable plus three options constants) are more easily accessible. They are indeed a little too often used to be buried so far in the menus. Unless their existence (and name), you can go totally on the side. In addition, as with the HV20, you can not change white balance during the shooting, which is regrettable in scenes with multiple light sources.
With 6.85 cm, the LCD is the limit of what is exploitable on an HD camcorder, but it remains visible in sunlight and from various angles. The viewfinder up to the eye is almost too small, and its œillère rigid plastic is not very comfortable.
The 10x optical zoom incorporates the image stabilizer SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer Canon, which improves stability by providing continuous information system. From our point of view, it works very well and even better than most the maximum telephoto. The autofocus (AF) snapshot Canon uses an approach rangefinder. It reverberates a signal about the system to provide an approximate location AF, so that the objective sought to lock focus on an area smaller. The Instant AF helps accelerate a little blocking the development in low-light conditions. Even if just slightly, we believe that overall performance in low-light conditions (development and video quality) are a little better with this model that we have observed on previous Canon camcorders general public. The HG10 also has a zoom switches more practical that we have seen for a camcorder of this category.
You will not find nor ability Zoom Mic (adaptation of the audio perspective depending on the focal length), or volume orders of entry. On the other hand, you have a microphone and a built-in accessory shoe if you want to improve the audio experience (at an additional cost).
In terms of image quality, there is not much to say. The HG10 returns photos and videos net saturated and well exposed. It notes the presence of noise and blurring in dark areas and contours faded in the light areas, but no more than usual for a camcorder of this category.
