Canon PowerShot G7 Review
Canon PowerShot G7 Review.
The Canon PowerShot G7 is a good camera second choice for professionals or for those who want to have on hand a relatively compact model.
The G7 includes the characteristics of the G range but loses its passage in screen tilted. It is a solid and comprehensive device which is intended to amateurs looking for a versatile and expandable, with a range of accessories. Only a true wide-angle it is lacking.
The Canon PowerShot G7 was announced before the exhibition of photography Photokina 2006, at a time when everyone thought that the Japanese manufacturer had abandoned the range. In the biggest surprise of all, the G7 is one of four models of Canon outset with the new image processing Digic III. One of its flagship features is the new detection engine faces.

Design
The PowerShot G7 looks related to relate to a film camera. Its chassis is black and a rather classy retro trigger completes his costume of the time spent.
The G7 did not destine undeniably Mr. Tout-le-World. First, its dimensions of 10.6 x 7.2 x 4.3 cm to 356 g, prevent the slide into a pocket. However, the size and weight of the G7 give it a feeling of strength and it remains one of the cameras mixed (general public and professionals) the most compact market. However, we have not appreciated the drum plastic telescopic target.
It has two command dials on top: one for shooting modes, one for choosing the ISO sensitivity. The G7 includes a built-in accessory shoe, so he accepts an external flash to get a more powerful. Like the PowerShot S80 and the EOS 30D, the G7 is equipped with a wheel to navigate through the menu system and settings. All buttons and controls of the G7 are clearly worded and reagents. Our only reproach is aimed at key quadridirectionnelles the wheel navigation, which are a bit too small. Depending on how you hold the camera, you may press the wrong place.
Canon have abandoned the LCD screen that pivots on the G7, if your main reason for buying a camera, you’d better opt for the PowerShot S3 IS. The screen of 6.35 cm G7 has a viewpoint broader and remains legible even in direct sunlight. Otherwise, you can always look through the optical viewfinder, even if it was appreciable that also displays status information on the device.
Like most other cameras, the battery compartment hosting the lithium-ion battery and memory card lies at the base of the G7. The device goes off when it is open, even in the midst of a framing. Once revived, he returned to the state in which it was, as a 6x telephoto setting, so you can continue your shot where you had left.
Characteristics
The new image processor Digic III, which feeds the PowerShot G7 10 megapixels promises a processing speed faster, lower power consumption, better noise reduction and a new feature detection faces. This function could well be the next flagship function after high ISO sensitivities on digital cameras. Indeed, before Canon, Fujifilm had already adopted a similar function on its FinePix F31fd and FinePix S6500fd. In idle mode, the G7 may take up to three faces, and nine if you press the shutter halfway to keeping them in the frame.
The detection of faces, however, presents some limitations, such as when the faces are too small, too big, too dark or too clear in relation to the overall composition, or when your subjects look at the sides, moving too fast, and so on. In reality, this function is more suited to take pictures with poses that impromptu portraits. Among all the characteristics of the new G7, we were disappointed to see that his 6x optical zoom starts at 35 mm (equivalent to a 35 mm camera), instead of a wide-angle 28 mm. If you align nine people in a room to take a group photo, you do not understand why Canon did not include a 28 mm on the PowerShot.
Another inconsistency: the opening up lower F2, 8 in wide-angle and F4, 8 to maximum telephoto. His predecessor, the PowerShot G6, is better with an opening over F2, 0.
The PowerShot G7 is equipped with an optical image stabilizer and a setting of maximum sensitivity of ISO 1600. These two features are also standard on most cameras general public mid-range. Using a system of decentralisation of the goal, the stabilizer can remain active permanently or activate only when the shutter is pressed. In panorama mode, the stabilizer compensates for vertical movement. If you want to control more elements that priority to the opening or the speed and manual options, you can also customize the display options on the LCD. The histogram in real time is very handy to ensure that exposure is correct. If you dive into the menu of the device, you can configure additional settings again and memorize the patterns C1 and C2 the wheel.
On the back of the aircraft in the upper left corner, is also a button shortcut that can be set up to find the settings that do not have their dedicated button. You have a choice between the resolution, image quality, white balance and measuring the light.
Another useful function in our view: control of the development. When viewing the image, immediately after the shooting, it is possible to view the area magnified the scope of the auto and check the development of the image. You can also browse other areas of the image using the directional pad. The G7 agrees converters wide angle and telephoto. Wide-angle Converter (WC-DC58B) changes the focal length by a factor of 0.75 x, while converting tele applies a factor of 2x.
Canon has included support for SD memory cards, high-capacity, up to 4 GB You can record VGA video at 30 frames per second for one hour or until saturation of your card, whichever occurs first. According to the manufacturer, lithium battery-Ion 720 mAh provides sufficient autonomy to approximately 220 shots.

Performances
During our tests, we found that the performance of the PowerShot G7 were satisfactory. We turned off the themes of startup, after which the unit was turned on in 1.1 seconds. It takes a little more to extinguish: 1.2 seconds. We took our first shot after 1.8 seconds and then were able mitrailler every 1.8 seconds without flash or 2.8 seconds.
The zoom mechanism on the G7 is silent. The development in conditions of adequate lighting requires an average of one second or less. Canon claims that its burst mode achieved two frames per second (fps), but we could not do better than 1.7 fps with our SD card Imation 1 GB mode 10 megapixels (compression fine).
Image Quality
Although the majority of users do not photograph the RAW format, but it is still disappointing that the PowerShot G7 does that JPEG. However, the image quality of the G7 is generally acceptable. We have begun to observe noise than 400 ISO, but he took to it very careful consideration. At ISO 800, noise was clearly visible, but this is the maximum sensitivity of the device, or ISO 1600, you will see your photos under a layer of sand. Unless you n’appréciiez this end, we recommend that you avoid this setting.
The automatic white balance worked well in most lighting conditions, except under a tungsten light where our shots came out with an orange tint. The choice of setting Tungsten solved the problem. We also noted a slight barrel distortion at the wide angle end.
