Verdict Canon PowerShot G9

Canon continues the tradition of Powershot G. Apart from the support of RAW, G9 does not much new. The G9 reproduced exactly the characteristics of the G7 but with a larger LCD screen and a sensor that goes to 12 megapixels. A very good camera for amateurs!

The last born of the range PowerShot G, G9 raises a screen LCD of 3 inches, a sensor of 12 mégapixels, and the taking into account of format RAW.

With the wire of time, the series G of PowerShot from Canon became a range in the range. Apparatuses whose very complete functionalities do of them one of the apparatuses of pocket of the professionals or a choice privileged to have thorough hand drive operations without rocking on the Reflex camera.

Compact bridge, G9 respects the tradition perfectly. Such point, that outside, it is difficult to distinguish it from its predecessor G7. Only screen LCD reveals the fact of having to make with a new apparatus. Of a diagonal of three inches, its definition of 230.000 pixels associated with the TrueColor process gives one returned époustouflant. In normal condition or full sun, impossible to take the screen failing this ! The appearance of Canon G9 answers a rather stupid and malicious logic! The race with the pixel. The definition climbs with 12 mégapixels, against 10 million for Canon G7. Marketing still struck. Not to be in withdrawal in the rays of the stores or on the lists of the sites of trade, Canon felt obliged to update its bridge ! Was this really necessary? From our point of view, not. G7 is always an excellent apparatus. G9 is only one clone which does not lose anything, but which – except for format RAW – does not bring anything moreover. The passage from 10 to 12 mégapixels is accompanied nevertheless by a light increase in the size of the sensor.

For the remainder, nothing in bulge, it is strictly speaking the same apparatus as G7 for the size and the functionalities. With its 10,6 X 7,2 X 4,3 cm for 350 G, G9 release a feeling of robustness. A feeling amplified by the body very out of metal. For a bridge, G9 wants to be compact. Its dimensions prevent it however from slipping into a pocket.

For the good points, G9 remains a bridge which gives a total control to the user. Priority with the opening, at the speed, development manual, balances white manual… All is there. The whole decorated by control knobs thought well and very pleasant of using (serrated roller of selection on the top, paving stone of navigation with rotary serrated roller to the back).Features such as optical stabilization or detecting face no shortage of the call. However, still no wide-angle to rendez-vous! The beach starts at 35 mm to finish at 210 mm. It must go through additional optical reach 26 mm or 420 mm. The ring around the lens unscrews to accommodate them.

The quality of image is excellent! No the bad surprise on this level. The processor of image processing Digic III seems to function with full. The colors are right, the details present and the quasi non-existent noise for reasonable sensitivities going up to 400 ISO. Beyond, it appears to be definitively notable beyond 800 ISO. The balance of the white functions as completely correctly, for little as the good adjustment is used.

Final precision, with a sensor of 12 million pixels, think of taking a large memory card.
