Canon PowerShot S2 IS Review
Provided a stabilizer, a resolution of 5 megapixels, large zoom capability and a set of hand controls, the PowerShot S2IS integrates the range essential to any avid photographer.
Verdict Canon PowerShot S2 IS
with its excellent set of features and performance improved, this camera zoom is very powerful even more interesting than its predecessor.
The successor of the S1 IS is not content to display a format slightly larger. If the image stabilizer is always present, the Canon PowerShot S2 IS presents various improvements, including a 5-megapixel sensor (against 3.2 on the S1 IS), a 12x optical zoom (10x instead) and a screen LCD 4.5 cm (against 3.8 cm). The incorporation of a Digic II processor and high-speed USB connection increase its speed. Add them a complete set of hand controls, and a video mode with high quality stereo sound, and S2 IS has everything to please photography enthusiasts.

Design Canon PowerShot S2 IS
Overall well-designed and offering a good balance, the Canon PowerShot allows a good grip. The plastic housing silver S2 enjoys a robust construction, but we would have preferred a lens that takes a little better. The few centimeters and additional grams, compared to S1, is barely noticed (513 g with the four AA batteries and SD card installed). In contrast, accustomed to notice the new S1 LCD tilt and swivel. Bigger than its predecessor: 4.5 cm against 3.8 cm, it remains well below the 6.3 cm LCD Sony DSC-H1. Nevertheless, the possibility to rotate the screen and the fold inwards is almost a smaller surface. In addition, the electronic viewfinder (EVF), equipped with adjustable diopter, is bigger and seems brighter than the Sony DSC-H1.
Image Quality
As expected, our test photos have proven generally good, showing well-saturated colors, exhibitions and a sharp focus net. On this last point, we should emphasize the excellent work done by the image stabilizer of the Canon PowerShot S2 IS.
The macro mode of S2 has worked very well, offering detailed topics. We had less luck when we tried to use the Super Macro mode of S2 IS, which allows according to the manufacturer to make a clarification to 0 cm. One thing is impossible to achieve.
The S2 IS has shown little sensitivity to noise below ISO 200. However, at ISO 200, noise has become visible and then things go from bad to worse. For photos taken indoors, automatic white balance produced images too hot, a defect common in cameras of the mark. This is also true of the effect of a fringe of purple coloration that we discovered along the contours strongly contrasting. The imperfection was not as pronounced as what we have seen in other Canon models.
